In [\textit{T. Figiel} et al., Isr. J. Math. 183, 199--231 (2011; Zbl 1235.46027)], the approximation property (AP) for pairs, and in [\textit{E. Oja}, Adv. Math. 258, 1--12 (2014; Zbl 1305.46007)], the principle of local reflexivity (PLR) which respects subspaces were introduced. In [\textit{E. Oja} and \textit{S. Treialt}, Stud. Math. 217, No. 1, 79--94 (2013; Zbl 1293.46012)], the authors applied the PLR which respects subspaces to obtain criteria for the duality AP respecting subspaces. In [\textit{T. Figiel} and \textit{W. B. Johnson}, J. Funct. Anal. 271, No. 3, 566--576 (2016; Zbl 1348.46021); Stud. Math. 231, No. 3, 287--292 (2015; Zbl 1368.46023)], the AP which respects to a nest of subspaces was introduced, which is an extension of the AP of pairs. In this context, the paper under review introduces the PLR respecting nests of subspaces. The PRL and the AP respecting nests of subspaces are an (important) extension of the PRL and the AP. To exemplify this, recall that for a Banach space \(X\), a family of subspaces of \(X\) is a nest if it is linearly ordered by inclusion. One of the different versions of the PLR respecting nests of subspaces proved by the authors is the following: Theorem 4.2. Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be Banach spaces. Let \(\mathcal U\) be a nest of closed subspaces of \(X\) containing \(\{0\}\) and \(\mathcal N_{\mathcal U}=\{V_U : U \in \mathcal U\}\) be nests of closed subspaces of \(Y\) containing \(Y\). Suppose that (1) \(\mathcal N_{\mathcal U}\) is closed under arbitrary intersections, (2) \(\mathcal N_{\mathcal U}\) is increasing on \(\mathcal U\) (i.e., \(V_{U}\subsetneq V_{\tilde U}\), whenever \(U\subsetneq \tilde U\)), (3) for every non-empty subfamily \(\mathcal N'\) of \(\mathcal N_{\mathcal U}\), \[ \left(\bigcap_{V_U \in \mathcal N'} V_U\right)^{\perp \perp}=\bigcap_{V_U \in \mathcal N'} V_U^{\perp \perp}. \] Let \(S \in \mathcal F(Y^*,X^*)\) satisfy \(S(V_U^{\perp})\subset U^{\perp}\) for all \(U \in \mathcal U\). Then there exists a net \((T_\upsilon)\subset \mathcal F(X,Y)\) satisfying \(T_{\upsilon}(U)\subset V_U\) for all \(\upsilon\) and for all \(U \in \mathcal U\) such that (1) \(\|T_\upsilon\| \rightarrow \|S\|\). (2) \(T_\upsilon^*y^* \rightarrow Sy^*\) for all \(y^* \in Y^*\). (3) \(T^{**}_\upsilon x^{**} \rightarrow S^*x^{**}\) for all those \(x^{**} \in X^{**}\) for which \(S^{*}x^{**} \in Y\). In the case that the nests are \(\mathcal U=\{\{0\},X\}\) and \(\mathcal N_{\mathcal U}=\{\{0\},Y\}\) the classical PLR is obtained and, in the case of \(\mathcal U=\{\{0\},U,X\}\) and \(\mathcal N_{\mathcal U}=\{\{0\},V,Y\}\) where \(U,V\) are closed subspaces of \(X\) and \(Y\), it is obtained a version of the PLR respecting subspaces. Among others things, as an application of the PLR respecting nests of subspaces, the authors obtains a criteria of the duality AP which respect nest of subspaces, extending the criteria of the duality AP which respect subspaces.
