The authors prove that the \(A_\infty\) property for the elliptic measure associated to a variable coefficient divergence form elliptic operator (satisfying some conditions) implies NTA. Therefore, the authors establish the converse of a result obtained by \textit{C. E. Kenig} and \textit{J. Pipher} [Publ. Mat., Barc. 45, No. 1, 199--217 (2001; Zbl 1113.35314)]. More precisely they consider a domain \(\Omega\) of \(\mathbb{R}^{n+1}\) (\(n \geq 2\)), which is a 1-sided chord-arc domain (i.e., a 1-sided NTA domain with Ahlfors regular boundary), and a second order divergence form operator \(Lu=-\mathrm{div}(a\nabla u)\) whose coefficients satisfy suitable assumptions. Then they show that if the elliptic measures both for \(L\) and its transpose \(L^{\mathrm{T}}\) satisfy a certain scale invariant higher integrability estimate, then the set \(\Omega\) is a chord-arc domain, i.e., a NTA domain with Ahlfors regular boundary.
