The authors investigate balanced \(L^2_h\)-domains of holomorphy. Let \(D=\{z\in\mathbb C^n: h(z)<1\}\) be a balanced domain (\(h\) is the Minkowski functional of \(D\)) and let \(L^2_h(D)\) be the Hilbert space of all \(L^2\)-integrable holomorphic functions on \(D\). Each function \(f\in L^2_h(D)\) may be represented by its Taylor series \(f(z)=\sum_{d=0}^\infty P_d(z)\), \(z\in D\), where \(P_d\) is a homogeneous polynomial of degree \(d\). Define \(h_f:=\limsup_{d\to+\infty}\root{d}\of{|P_d|}\). Let \(\{P_{d,j}\}_{(d,j)\in\mathbb N_0\times\mathcal I_d}\) be an orthonormal basis of the space \(L^2_h(D)\) such that \(P_{d,j}\) is a homogeneous polynomial of degree \(d\). Set \(h_{BK}:=\limsup_{d\to+\infty}\root{2d}\of{|P_{d,j}|^2}\). The authors prove that the domain \(\{z\in\mathbb C^n: h_{BK}^\ast(z)<1\}\) is the \(L^2_h\)-envelope of holomorphy of \(D\), where \({}^\ast\) stands for the upper regularization. Moreover, the following conditions are equivalent: (i) \(D\) is an \(L^2_h\)-domain of holomorphy; (ii) \(h=h_f^\ast\) for some function \(f\in L^2_h(D)\); (iii) \(h=h_{BK}^\ast\). In the case where \(n=2\) the authors show that if \(D\subset\mathbb C^2\) is a balanced pseudoconvex domain, then \(L^2_h(D)=\{0\}\) if and only if \(D\) is linearly equivalent to \(\mathbb C^2\), \(\mathbb C\times\mathbb D\), or to the domain \(\{(z_1,z_2)\in\mathbb C^2: |z_1|^t|z_2|^{1-t}<1\}\) for some \(0<t<1\). Such a geometric characterization is not known for \(n\geq3\).
