Let \(X\) be an infinite-dimensional Banach space and \(\gamma\) be the Hausdorff measure of noncompactness. An optimal retraction problem consists in the constant \[ W_{\gamma}(X)=\inf \{k\ge 1: \text{there is a}\ k\text{-ball-contractive retraction}\ R: B(X)\to S(X)\}, \] where \(B(X)\) denotes the closed unit ball of \(X\) and \(S(X)\) the unit sphere of \(X\), respectively. \textit{J. Wośko} [Ann. Univ. Mariae Curie-Skłodowska, Sect. A 45, 127--130 (1991; Zbl 0784.47049)] proved that \( W_{\gamma}(C[0,1])=1\). The authors show that, for every \(\varepsilon >0\), there exists a proper \(k\)-ball-contractive retraction of \(B(C^m[0,1])\) onto \(S(C^m[0,1])\) with \(k<1+\varepsilon\), for which a constructive proof is given. This implies that \( W_{\gamma}(C^m[0,1])=1\).
