The main topic of this paper is the study of diagonal continuous linear operators on the spaces \(H(B(0,R))\) or \(H(\mathbb{C} )\) of functions holomorphic on some ball \(B(0,R)\) of the complex plane or on \(\mathbb{C} \). Diagonal operators have as eigenvectors the monomials \(z^n\), the associated eigenvalues being \(\lambda _n\) with the \(\lambda _n\)'s distinct: \(D(\sum a_n z^n)=\sum a_n \lambda _n z^n\) formally. The operator \(D\) is said to admit spectral synthesis if every invariant subspace for \(D\) is the closed linear span of some collection of monomials \(z^n\). It is not known if there exist diagonal operators on \(H(B(0,R))\) or \(H(\mathbb{C} )\) which fail spectral synthesis. In this paper, is is shown that, under mild conditions, such a diagonal operator has a non-spectral invariant subspace if and only if every entire function of a particular growth is representable as a generalized Dirichlet series \(\sum b_ne^{\lambda _n z}\).
