The author considers the parametrized variational inequality \[ (\varphi -u, u-F(\lambda, u))_+\geq 0 \text{ for all }\varphi \in K \] in some Banach space \(X\), where \((\cdot ,\cdot )_+\) is the upper semi-inner product of \(X\), \(F:\mathbb{R}\times X\to X\), \(K\) is a nonempty closed convex subset of \(X\), as well as its particular version when \(X\) is a Hilbert space and \(K\) is a cone (the inequality is then equivalent to the problem \(u=P_K(F(\lambda ,u))\), where \(P_K:X\to K\) is a projection onto the nearest element). In particular, he investigates the respective local mapping degree, since the difference between such degrees for two parameters implies the existence of a global bifurcation for the considered problems. He proposes a linearization of \(F\) and proves a number of properties for a linear case. Most important are conditions implying that the degree is equal or different than \(0\). It is additionally illustrated by concrete examples. Throughout the paper, the author precisely describes how his results generalize in various aspects some earlier similar investigations.
