Let \((M,g)\) be a non-compact connected Riemannian manifold of dimension \(d\geq1\) (possibly incomplete). Let \(H\) be the Schrödinger operator on \(L^2(M): H=-\frac12\Delta_g+V\). The authors present 4 conditions which ensure that a self-adjoint realization of \(H\) does not have eigenvalues greater than some computable constant. In the Euclidean case, the theory amounts to the absence of positive eigenvalues. In the general setting, the aim of the paper is to examine the absence of embedded eigenvalues. One example is given by a manifold with ends where geodesic coordinates are naturally defined; one of the geometric conditions in this setting is a positive lower bound for the second fundamental form of angular submanifolds at infinity inside the end. Another condition is an upper bound for the trace of this quantity. A third one is a bound on the derivatives of part of the trace where some oscillatory behavior of the trace is permitted. In addition to these geometric bounds, conditions on the potential are required. \S1 provides an introduction to the paper. \S2 treats both global conditions and conditions within an end. \S3 deals with Mourre-type commutators and approximate sequences. \S4 provides a-priori super-exponential decay estimates of eigenstates. \S5 deals with the absence of super-exponentially decaying eigenvalues.
