The authors consider the one-dimensional heat and wave equations under suitable non-local, integral constraints. This kind of assumptions -- instead of classical boundary conditions such as Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions -- are motivated by equations ruled by conservation laws. Note that it is quite natural to ask if these minimal constraints are sufficient to obtain well-posedness. The authors face this important question and introduce an appropriate Hilbert setting that, thanks to an integration-by-parts formula in Sobolev spaces of negative order, allows the authors to use semigroup theory to prove the analytic well-posedness of the problems. Moreover, they improve regularity results previously obtained by other authors. In doing so, the authors introduce a parametrization of such integral conditions that includes known cases but also shows the connection with more usual boundary conditions, such as periodic ones. In the self-adjoint case, the authors surprisingly obtain eigenvalue asymptotics of the so-called Weyl's type.
