Since the class of non-commutative Noetherian rings is more complicated than the class of commutative Noetherian rings, it is quite natural, and in fact, an interesting, challenging job to extend commutative notions, results to the non-commutative ones, even to rings which are not necessarily Noetherian. In this paper the authors investigate the so-called Gorenstein conditions for triangular matrix rings. In particular, they characterize when a triangular matrix ring \(T\), i.e., a ring \(T\) with an idempotent \(e^2=e\in T\) such that \(eT(1-e)=0\); \(U=(1-e)Te\) has finite projective dimension over \(B=(1-e)T(1-e)\) and finite flat dimension over \(A=eTe\), is left Gorenstein regular. They also characterize when a left module over a left Gorenstein regular triangular matrix ring \(T\), is Gorenstein projective or Gorenstein injective. As an application they investigate when the triangular matrix ring is left CM-free, that is, when all Gorenstein projectives are projective. Further application is obtained when the cardinality of generator sets of Gorenstein projective modules is discussed.
