Motivated by the theory of Dirac structures, the authors prove that any \(n\times n\) matrix \(H\) with entries that are rational pseudodifferential operators over an ordinary differential field \(K\) of characteristic \(0\) can be represented as a product \(H=AB^{-1}\), where \(A\) and \(B\) are coprime \(n\times n\) matrices with entries in \(K[\partial]\) and \(B\) has a non-zero Dieudonné determinant. This is called a minimal fractional decomposition. Moreover, it is also shown that all such minimal fractional decompositions can be obtained one from another by right multiplication by a matrix differential operator. The fundamental theorem of the differential Galois theory is one of the ingredients in the proof of the main result.
