Let \(G\) denote a finite group acting on a compact Riemann surface \(S\). The main result of the paper is an explicit description of the isotypical decomposition of the rational representation of the action of \(G\) on the Jacobian variety \(JS\). In the special case of groups, all of whose rational irreducible representations are absolutely irreducible, this has been worked out by \textit{A. E. Ksir} [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 26, No. 2, 107--116 (2001; Zbl 1010.14008)]. In the present paper the results are obtained in terms of the geometric signature of the action, which is a slightly more precise notion than the usual signature. The geometric signature of the action of \(G\) on \(S\) is defined to be the tuple \((\gamma;[m_1, C_1],\dots, [m_t, C_t])\), where \(\gamma\) denotes the genus of the quotient \(S/G\), the map \(S\to S/G\) is ramified exactly over \(t\) points \(q_1,\dots, q_t\) and the conjugacy class and order of the stabilizer of a point over \(q_i\) are \(C_i\) and \(m_i\) for \(i= 1,\dots, t\). It turns out that the geometric signature completely determines the isotypical decomposition of the rational representation of \(G\) on \(JX\), as well as the ramification structure of all intermediate coverings of \(S\to S/G\). Moreover the dimensions of the abelian subvarieties of the isogeny decomposition of \(JX\) are expressed in terms of it. As a consequence one gets that in case \(\gamma\geq 2\) the abelian subvarieties of all rational irreducible representations are positive dimensional.
