    A strongly continuous family \(T(\cdot)\) of bounded operators in a Banach space \(X\) defined in \(0 \leq t < \tau\) is called a local \(\alpha\)-times integrated \(C\)-semigroup on \(X\) if it satisfies \(T(t)C = CT(t)\) (\(C\) a bounded operator in \(X),\) \(T(0) = 0\) and \[ T(s)T(t)x = \bigg( \int_0^{s+t} - \int_0^s - \int_0^t\bigg) j_{\alpha-1}(s + t - r)CT(r)x \,dr \] for \(x \in X,\) where \(j_r(t) = t^r/\Gamma(r+1)\) \((t\geq 0)\). For \(\alpha = 0\), the functional equation is \(T(0) = C\) and \[ T(s)T(t) = T(s + t)C. \] The semigroup is nondegenerate if \[ T(t)x = 0 \quad (0 < t < \tau/2) \quad \Longrightarrow \quad x = 0. \] This paper deals with characterizations of degenerate and nondegenerate local \(\alpha\)-times integrated semigroups and with their relation to the well-posedness of an associated Cauchy problem.
