Mathieu's series is defined for \(r>0\) by \[ S(r)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{2n}{(n^2+r^2)^2}. \] The authors obtain by direct computations new upper and lower bounds for \(S(r)\) which improve the results of \textit{H. Alzer, J. L. Brenner} and \textit{O. G. Ruehr} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 218, 607--610 (1998; Zbl 0904.26010)]. For example they prove that \[ \left(r^2+\frac1{2}-\frac{4r^2+1}{12(r^2+a)}\right)^{-1}< S(r) < \left(r^2+\frac1{2}-\frac{4r^2+1}{12(r^2+b)}\right)^{-1} (r>0) \] hold for \(a=3/2\), \(b=1/4\) and ask for the best constants \(a\) and \(b\).
