Modulation spaces are used as a tool to study smoothness in terms of phase-space properties rather then through the differentiability of functions. A modulation space as a symbol class of pseudodifferential operators was first introduced by \textit{J.\,Sjöstrand} [Math.\ Res.\ Lett.\ 1, No.~2, 185--192 (1994; Zbl 0840.35130)]. The author extends this approach using different techniques coming from time-frequency analysis [cf.\ \textit{K.\,Gröchenig}, ``Foundations of time-frequency analysis'' (Boston, MA:\ Birkhäuser) (2001; Zbl 0966.42020)]. In particular, he introduces new classes of Banach algebras of pseudodifferential operators with symbols from certain modulation spaces and investigates their composition and the functional calculus. Operators in these algebras possess the spectral invariance property on the associated family of modulation spaces.
