Motivated by some problems of meteorology and fluid mechanics [cf. \textit{P. Kahlig} and \textit{J. Matkowski}, Sitzungsber., Abt. II, Österr. Akad. Wiss., Math.-Naturwiss. Kl. 211, 117--136 (2002; Zbl 1076.39019)], \textit{J. Aczél} and \textit{J. Schwaiger} [ibid. 208, 171--177 (1999; Zbl 1003.39022)] and \textit{L. Reich} [ibid. 208, 165--170 (1999; Zbl 1004.39013)] have determined the general continuous solutions \(f : \mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\;\) or \(f : [0,\infty[\to\mathbb{R}\;\) of \(\;(1)\;f[x+yf(x)]=f(x)f(y)\), when \(x, y \in [0,\infty[\) or \(x+yf(x), x, y \in [0,\infty[,\) respectively. The present authors offer the result that the general not identically zero solution \(\;(2) \;f : ]0,\infty[\to\mathbb{R}\;\) of (1) with \(\;(3)\;\) \(x+yf(x), x, y \in [0,\infty[\;\) can either be extended to \(\tilde{f}: \mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\; (\tilde{f}\) satisfying (2) -- this is the well known Gołąb-Schinzel equation [see e.g. \textit{J. Aczél} and \textit{J. Dhombres}, Functional equations in several variables with applications to mathematics, information theory and to the natural and social sciences, (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge-New York), (1989; Zbl 0685.39006)] -- and its restriction to \(]0,\infty[\) being \(f\)) or \(f\) is smaller than \(-1\) at one point and zero everywhere else on \(]0,\infty[.\) Also descriptions are offered of all solutions (2) of (1) with (3), continuous at a point or Lebesgue- or Baire-measurable.
