The paper deals with ideals of ordered semigroups [cf. \textit{A. H. Clifford} and \textit{G. B. Preston}, The algebraic theory of semigroups. Vol. 1. Am. Math. Soc., Providence (1961; Zbl 0111.03403)]. Fuzzy ideals [cf. \textit{N. Kuroki}, Inf. Sci. 53, 203--236 (1991; Zbl 0714.20052)] are similar to characteristic functions of semigroup ideals and many properties of ideals can be characterized by fuzzy ideals [cf., e.g., \textit{N. Kuroki}, J. Fuzzy Math. 3, 435--447 (1995; Zbl 0839.20075); \textit{X.-Y. Xie}, J. Fuzzy Math. 8, 231--241 (2000; Zbl 0957.20040); \textit{J. Ahsan, R. M. Latif} and \textit{M. Shabir}, J. Fuzzy Math. 9, 259--270 (2001; Zbl 1002.20036)]. This paper uses fuzzy bi-ideals in a characterization of simple (Theorem 2), completely regular (Theorem 3) and strongly regular (Theorem 4) ordered semigroups. Theorems 5 and 6 characterize ordered semigroups which form a semilattice of simple semigroups. Reviewer's remark: In the proof of Theorem 2, \([0,1]\) is incorrectly replaced by \(\{0,1\}\).
