The authors extend their previous analyses on current fluctuations in nonequilibrium diffusive systems, a relevant topic in non-equilibrium statistical physics [\textit{T. Bodineau} and \textit{B. Derrida}, Phys. Rev. E 72, 066110 (2005), \textit{B. Derrida} et al., J. Stat. Phys. 118, No. 5--6, 795--811 (2005; Zbl 1073.82029)]. In the present paper, they study the large deviation functional of the current fluctuations of a diffusive stochastic gas for the Weakly Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process in contact with two reservoirs. They compare this functional in the large drift limit to the one obtained by Jensen-Varadhan for the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process [\textit{S. R. Varadhan}, Advanced Studies in Pure Mathematics 39, 1--27 (2004; Zbl 1114.60026)]. They show that the latter is recovered from a macroscopic perspective, but that a full microscopic understanding is still lacking, and they formulate some conjectures for generalizing the Jensen and Varadhan functional to open systems.
