Let \(\phi\) be an analytic self-map of the unit disk \(\Delta=\{\,z:| z| <1\}\). A linear composition operator \(C_\phi\) is defined by \(C_\phi(f)=f\circ\phi\) for \(f\) in the set \(H(\Delta)\) of analytic functions on \(\Delta\). The Green function with logarithmic singularity at \(a\) is denoted by \(g(z,a)=\log| \frac{1-{\overline a}z}{a-z}| \), \(a\), \(z\in\Delta\). Let the function \(K:[0,\infty)\to[0,\infty)\) be nondecreasing with \(K(1)>0\), and let the integral \(\int_0^{1/e}K(\log(1/\rho))\rho\,d\rho\) be convergent. For \(f\in H(\Delta)\), the Bloch space \(\mathcal B\) is a Banach space with norm \[ \| f\|_{\mathcal B}=| f(0)| +\sup_{z\in\Delta}(1-| z| ^{2})| f'(z)| <\infty, \] and \(\mathcal B_0\) is the subspace of \(\mathcal B\) for which \(\lim_{| z| \to1}(1-| z| ^{2})| f'(z)| =0\). A function \(f\in H(\Delta)\) is said to belong to \(Q_K\) if \[ \| f\|^{2}_{Q_K}=\sup_{a\in\Delta}\iint_\Delta| f'(z)| ^{2}K(g(z,a))dA(z)<\infty. \] The \(Q_K\) space is a Banach space with norm defined by \(\| f\|_K=| f(0)| +\| f\|_{Q_K}\). The author's main result in the paper under review, which extends some previously known results by \textit{Z. Lou} [J. Austral. Math. Soc. 70, No.~2, 161--188 (2001; Zbl 0986.47024)] and \textit{W. Smith} and \textit{R. Zhao} [Analysis 17, No. 2--3, 239--263 (1997; Zbl 0901.47023)] is the following: Let \(K(r)\) be non-negative, nondecreasing on \([0,\infty)\) and let \(\phi\) be an analytic self-map of \(\Delta\). Then the following statements are equivalent: (i) \(C_\phi:\mathcal B\to Q_K\) is compact (ii) \(C_\phi:\mathcal B_0\to Q_K\) is compact (iii) \(\phi\in Q_K\) and \[ \lim_{r\to1}\sup_{a\in\Delta}\iint_{| \phi| >r}\frac{| \phi'(z)| ^{2}} {(1-| \phi(z)| ^{2})^{2}}K\bigl(g(z,a)\bigr)dA(z)=0. \] As a special case the criterion for \(\phi\) to be bounded or compact from \(\mathcal B\), \(\mathcal B_0\) into the Dirichlet space \(\mathcal D\) is given.
