The authors consider a variation-norm analogue of the maximal operator \[ H^*[f_1, f_2](x)=\sup_k \Big | \sum\limits_{|I_P|\geq 2^k} |I_P|^{-1/2} \langle f_1, \phi_{P_1}\rangle \langle f_2, \phi_{P_2}\rangle \phi_{P_3}(x)\Big |, \] where the summation is performed over \(P\) in a collection of dyadic rectangles in \(\mathbb R^+ \times\mathbb R^+\) of area four (also known as quartiles) and \(\phi_{P_1}, \phi_{P_2}, \phi_{P_3}\) denote dyadic wave packets adapted to appropriate subsets of \(P\). New variation-norm estimates are obtained for the Walsh model of the truncated bilinear Hilbert transform.
