Using combinatorial and probabilistic arguments, the authors prove a series of important results on the square variation operator, while the latter majorizes the partial sum maximal operator. Among them refinements of the classical Rademacher-Menshov theorem, of Bourgain's work, etc. In these results, the \(N\)-th partial sums with respect to any orthonormal system are bounded by appropriate sharp powers of \(\log N\).
