The authors use the orbit method in the context of loop Lie algebras to reveal geometric and algebraic meaning of separation of variables for a class of integrable systems. They apply this to a coupled 3-component nonlinear Schrödinger equation and an isotropic \(\mathrm{SU}(3)\) Landau-Lifshitz equation.
