A surprising (although already classical) result due to \textit{H. Corson} [Fundam. Math. 49, 143--145 (1961; Zbl 0096.31203)] states that, for any covering \(\tau \) by closed convex bounded (CCB) subsets of any Banach space \(X\) containing an infinite-dimensional reflexive subspace, there exists a compact subset \(C\) of \(X\) that meets infinitely many members of \(\tau \). The authors strengthen this result proving the even more surprising fact that, if \(X\) contains an infinite-dimensional separable dual space, then for every covering \(\tau \) of \(X\) by CCB subsets, an algebraically finite-dimensional compact set \(C\) which intersects infinitely many members of \(\tau\) can always be found. As an intermediate step, the following result of independent interest is obtained. Let \(X\) be a separable dual Banach space and let \(\{V_n\}_{n=1}^\infty\) be a covering of \(X\) by CCB bodies. Then there is an infinite-dimensional subspace \(E \subset X\) that admits an equivalent dual norm such that all \(V_n \cap E\) are closed in the corresponding \(w^*\)-topology of \(E\).
