Suppose a compact Lie group acts on a polarized complex projective manifold \((M,L)\). Under favorable circumstances, the Hilbert-Mumford quotient for the action of the complexified group may be described as a symplectic quotient (or reduction). In the paper under review the author considers some metric aspects of this identification, by analyzing the relationship between the Szegő kernel of the pair \((M,L)\) and that of the quotient. Key result: The Szegő kernel of the triple \((M,L,h)\) descends, in the appropriate sense, to an elliptic Toeplitz operator on the circle bundle of the quotient triple \((M_0,L_0,h_0)\), and after a suitable renormalization the symbol of this Toeplitz operator is (proportional to) the effective volume of the action. The techniques in the paper under review are based in a general sense on the microlocal theory of the Szegő kernel, and more specifically on its formulation based on Fourier-Hermite distributions.
