Let \(X\) be a Banach space and \(\mathcal{A} = (\mathcal{A},\|\cdot\|_{\mathcal{A}})\) be a Banach operator ideal. \(X\) has the \(\lambda\)-bounded approximation property for \(\mathcal{A}\) (\(\lambda\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\)) if, for every Banach space \(Y\) and for every operator \(T\) in \(\mathcal{A}(X,Y)\), there exists a net of finite rank operators \((S_\alpha)\) on \(X\) such that \(S_\alpha \to I_X\) uniformly on compact subsets of \(X\) and \(\limsup_\alpha \|TS_\alpha\|_{\mathcal{A}} \leq \lambda \|T\|_{\mathcal{A}}\). It is known that the usual \(\lambda\)-bounded approximation property is the \(\lambda\)-BAP for the ideal of integral operators [\textit{Å. Lima} et al., Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 138, No. 1, 287--297 (2010; Zbl 1193.46012)]. Two weaker versions of the \(\lambda\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\) are introduced. The weak \(\lambda\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\) is the same as \(\lambda\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\) except that it is only required that \(S_\alpha \to I_X\) pointwise. \(X\) has the local \(\lambda\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\) if, for every Banach space \(Y\) and for each operator \(T \in \mathcal{A}(X,Y)\), there exists a net \((T_\alpha)\) of finite rank operators from \(X\) to \(Y\) such that \(T_\alpha \to T\) pointwise and \(\limsup_\alpha \|T_\alpha\|_{\mathcal{A}} \leq \lambda \|T\|_{\mathcal{A}}\). It is shown that all the three properties are different. Every Banach space has the local \(1\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\) whenever \(\mathcal{A}\) is a minimal Banach operator ideal (Proposition~2.1). If \(\mathcal{A}\) is an injective Banach operator ideal, then the weak \(\lambda\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\) and the local \(\lambda\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\) are equivalent (Theorem 2.12). If \(\mathcal{A}\) is an injective closed Banach operator ideal, then the \(\lambda\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\) and the local \(\lambda\)-BAP for \(\mathcal{A}\) are equivalent (Proposition 2.13). The question of inheritance of approximation properties from the dual space \(X^*\) to \(X\) is also studied and the above approximation properties are related to approximation properties given by tensor norms. As an example, the Saphar \(\lambda\)-BAP of order \(p\) is the weak \(\lambda\)-BAP for the ideal of absolutely \(p^*\)-summing operators, \(1 \leq p \leq \infty\), \(1/p + 1/p^* = 1\).
