For an arbitrary automorphism \(\varphi\) of vertex algebra \(V\) the author introduces a notion of a \(\varphi\)-twisted \(V\)-module, which generalizes a notion of \(\varphi\)-twisted modules in [\textit{Y.-Z. Huang}, Commun. Math. Phys. 298, No. 1, 265--292 (2010; Zbl 1233.17025)]. The Borcherds identity is proved for \(\varphi\)-twisted \(V\)-modules when \(\varphi\) is locally finite and, as a consequence, the commutator formula is derived. Next, the twisted modules of affine and Heisenberg vertex algebras are studied. More precisely, let \(\varphi\) be an automorphism of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) such that the nondegenerate symmetric invariant bilinear form on \(\mathfrak{g}\) is \(\varphi\)-invariant. It is proved that every \(\varphi\)-twisted module for the universal affine vertex algebra \(V^{\kappa}(\mathfrak{g})\) at level \(\kappa\) is a restricted level \(\kappa\) module for the \(\varphi\)-twisted affinization \(\hat{\mathfrak{g}}_{\varphi}\) of \(\mathfrak{g}\), and vice versa. Furthermore, the action of the Virasoro algebra was given. Finally, for a finite-dimensional commutative Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{h}\) the \(\varphi\)-twisted affinization \(\hat{\mathfrak{h}}_{\varphi}\) and its irreducible highest-weight modules are explicitly described.
