In the last two decades, one of the authors has been dealing with the Heisenberg group and the Laguerre calculus. This calculus is the symbolic tensor calculus originally induced by the Laguerre functions on the Heisenberg group $\mathcal{H}_n$, which was first introduced on $\mathcal{H}_1$ by Greiner in those years and later extended to $\mathcal{H}_n$ and $\mathcal{H}_n \times \mathcal{R}_m$ by Beals, Gaveau, Greiner and Vauthier in 1986. This calculus is widely used for the inversion of differential operators on the Heisenberg group. In the paper, the authors extend this calculus for nilpotent groups of step two, and test it in the determining of the fundamental solution of the sub-Laplace operator. They also apply it to find the Szegő kernels of the projection operators to a kind of regular functions on the quaternion Heisenberg group. In fact, the paper is twofold because its first part can be considered as a continuation of the previous papers by some of the authors. In that part, the authors generalize results obtained on the Heisenberg group to general nilpotent Lie groups of step 2, whereas in the second part they show some applications.
