Consider the system of two scalar singularly perturbed differential equations \[ \begin{array}{l} \varepsilon^2 \, \Big(\frac{{d^2u}}{{dx^2}} -w(x) \frac{{du}}{{dx}}\Big)= F(u,v,x,\varepsilon),\\ \varepsilon^2 \, \frac{{dv}}{{dx}} = f(u,v,x,\varepsilon) \quad \mbox{for} \quad 0 < x < 1 \end{array}\tag{1} \] under the boundary condition \[ u(0,\varepsilon)=u^0, \; v(0,\varepsilon)=v^0, \; u(1,\varepsilon)=u^1 \tag{2} \] and the following key assumptions \begin{itemize} \item[\((A_0).\)] \(F\) and \(f\) are sufficiently smooth, \(\varepsilon\) is a small positive parameter. \item[\((A_1).\)] The equation \[ f(u,v,x,0)=0 \] has a smooth simple root \(u=\varphi(u,x)\). \item[\((A_2).\)] The equation \[ F(u,\varphi(u,x),x,0)=0 \] has exactly three simple roots \(u=\psi_i(x), i=1,2,3,\) which are sufficiently smooth and satisfy \[ \psi_1(x) < \psi_2(x) < \psi_3(x). \] \item[\((A_3).\)] The equation \[ I(x) := \int_{\psi_1(x)}^{\psi_3(x)}F(u,\varphi(u,x),x,0)du =0 \] has a simple root \(x_0\). \end{itemize} Under additional conditions, the author proves the existence of a solution of the boundary value problem (1), (2) for sufficiently small \(\varepsilon\) which has a transition layer near \(x_0\), called steplike contrast structure. Using the method of asymptotic differential inequalities, the asymptotics in \(\varepsilon\) of the solution is determined.
