A strictly semistable pair \((\mathscr{X},H)\) consist of a strictly semistable proper scheme \(\mathscr{X}\) over a rank one valuation ring and a horizontal Cartier divisor \(H\), such that \(H\) plus the special fiber of \(\mathscr{X}\) is a simple normal crossings divisor. Given a strictly semistable pair \((\mathscr{X},H)\), the construction of a skeleton \(S(\mathscr{X},H) \subset X^{\text{an}}\) is given. Here \(X^{\text{an}}\) denotes the analytification of the generic fiber of \(\mathscr{X}\), which is a smooth variety. These skeletons are a strong deformation retract of \(X^{\text{an}} \backslash H^{}\). This construction generalizes the one done by Berkovich for strictly semistable formal schemes. The authors also proved the existence of faithful tropicalizations in this case. Furthermore, they provide a slope formula in this setting and a general version of the Sturmfels-Tevelev multiplicity formula. The techniques used in the proofs are Berkovich spaces, tropical geometry and intersection theory on proper flat integral separated schemes finitely presented over an arbitrary rank one valuation ring. An overview of the latter is given in the Appendix A of the article.
