A closed connected contact manifold is called Besse when all its Reeb orbits are closed, and in such a case the Reeb orbits admit a common period. If in addition the common period of the Reeb orbits is also their minimal period, the contact manifold is called Zoll. A criterion in terms of spectral invariants for a convex contact sphere to be Besse is established. Similarly, a criterion for a convex contact sphere to be Zoll is also proved. Some sufficient conditions for a closed hypersurface of restricted contact type with discrete action spectrum to be Besse are obtained. An interesting characterization of a simply connected spin Zoll manifold of dimension at least 2, equipped with a Riemannian metric, is presented.
