Some geometric structures and constructions on almost abelian algebras and Lie groups are considered, as well as on the corresponding compact solvmanifolds. A Lie algebra is called almost abelian if it has an abelian ideal of codimension 1. On such Lie groups and algebras some Hermitian metrics are considered, which are generalizations of the Kähler metrics -- they are balanced metrics and strong Kähler with torsion metrics (SKT). It is proved that if \(g\) is an almost abelian Lie algebra endowed with a complex structure \(J\) and \((g, J)\) admits two metrics -- an SKT metric and a balanced metric -- then it admits some Kähler metric. A classification of six-dimensional almost abelian Lie algebras which have a balanced metric is given. It consists of three separate Lie algebras and six families (depending on 1, 2 or 3 parameters). In the framework of compact solvmanifolds, this implies that if \(\Gamma \setminus G\) is an almost abelian solvmanifold endowed with a left-invariant complex structure \(J\) and \((\Gamma \setminus G, J)\) admits an SKT metric and a balanced metric, then it admits some Kähler metric. Then two types of flows of Hermitian metrics are studied: flows of balanced metrics (which preserves the balanced condition; they reduce to Calabi flow for Kähler initial data) and anomaly flows (a flow of \((2, 2)\)-forms on a complex 3-fold) on almost abelian Lie groups. In particular, it is proved that an anomaly flow preserves the balanced condition and that locally conformally Kähler metrics on almost abelian Lie groups endowed with a left-invariant complex structure are fixed points of the anomaly flow.
