The paper is devoted to the discussion of results concerning the Fourier series of elements in reduced twisted group \(C^\ast\)-algebras of discrete groups and, more generally, in reduced crossed products associated to twisted actions of discrete groups on unital \(C^\ast\)-algebras. In Section 1, the authors give some background material on classical Fourier series and various operator algebras associated to discrete groups. Sections 2 and 3 are devoted to the review of the authors' own results [J. Fourier Anal. Appl. 15, No. 3, 336--365 (2009; Zbl 1178.22006); Münster J. Math. 5, No. 1, 183--208 (2012; Zbl 1290.46059); J. Fourier Anal. Appl. 21, No. 1, 32--75 (2015; Zbl 1328.46055); ``On maximal ideals in certain reduced twisted \(C^\ast\)-crossed products'', Math. Proc. Cambridge Phil. Soc. 158, No. 3, 399--417 (2015; \url{doi:10.1017/S0305004115000031}); ``The Fourier Stieltjes algebra of a \(C^\ast\)-dynamical system'', J. Math. (to appear)] illustrating various aspects of Fourier theory in discrete reduced group \(C^\ast\)-algebras and \(C^\ast\)-crossed products. There are also some new results and open problems.
