This is a review paper based on the course read by the author in 2013 in Portugal. The two big topics considered are characteristics-bicharacteristics and Hamilton-Jacobi theory. The author discusses well-posedness of initial value problems, propagation of singularities of solutions and existence of complete integrals via geometric theory of differential equations. Examples of physical and mathematical flavour are provided.
