Let \((X, B)\) be a Kawamata log terminal pair such that \(K+B\) is big. It is established in the landmark paper [\textit{C. Birkar} et al., J. Am. Math. Soc. 147, No. 2, 405--468 (2010; Zbl 1210.14019)] that such a pair \((X, B)\) has finitely many log minimal models \(Y_i\). In view of the geography of log models, for a fixed variety \(Y_i\), we can naturally consider the problem of characterizing boundary divisors \(B\) on \(X\) such that \(Y_i\) is a log minimal model of \((X, B)\). The main result of the paper under review solves this problem using the asymptotic base locus of \(K+B\). For this purpose, the author introduces many new equivalence relations of divisors and shows some basic properties. As applications of the main result, two structure theorems of various positive cones of Fano type varieties are given in the end. More precisely, the author studies the decomposition of the big cone into numerical Zariski chambers and proves that the partially ample cones are rational polyhedral inside the big cone. The rational polyhedrality result gives a partial answer to a question raised by \textit{B. Totaro} in [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 15, No. 3, 731--754 (2013; Zbl 1277.14007)].
