Let \(C\) be a smooth curve of genus \(g\geq 2\) , \(C^{(2)}\) its 2nd symmetric product, \(C_p\subset C\) a coordinate curve with base point \(P\in C\) and \(B\) an irreducible smooth curve in \(C^{(2)}\) with degree \(d=C_p.B\). Such curves \(B\) of degree \(d=1\) are characterized in [\textit{E. Arbarello} et al., Geometry of algebraic curves. Volume I. New York etc.: Springer-Verlag (1985; Zbl 0559.14017)] and [\textit{C. Ciliberto}, Lect. Notes Math. 997, 113--123 (1983; Zbl 0513.14016)]. In the present paper the author gives a characterization of irreducible smooth such curves \(B\) with any degree in terms of the existence of an irreducible smooth curve \(D\) and morphisms from \(D\) to \(C\) and \(B\) which give a certain diagram that does not reduce [\textit{K. Chan}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 212, No. 12, 2623--2632 (2008; Zbl 1155.14027)].
