The author generalizes the construction of mixed motives attached to fundamental groups due to Deligne and Goncharov, to higher homotopy groups of spaces enjoying a certain nilpotency property. Such higher homotopy groups are shown to give rise to objects in Nori's category of motives. In particular, this new construction applies to some hyperplane arrangement complements, which are either general position arrangements, or hypersolvable arrangements. In this case, the higher homotopy groups are shown to give rise to objects in the Deligne-Goncharov category of mixed Tate motives.
