The paper deals with the limit cycles which bifurcate in piecewise smooth planar systems of the form \[ \dot{x}=H_y^\pm(x,y)/R^\pm(x,y)+\varepsilon f^\pm(x,y), \dot{y}=-H_x^\pm(x,y)/R^\pm(x,y)+\varepsilon g^\pm(x,y), \] where one takes case \(+\) if \(x>0\) and case \(-\) if \(x\leq 0\) and all functions \(H^+\), \(H^-\) etc. are analytic in their domains. Under some assumptions, the authors calculate the first-order approximation (with respect to the small parameter \(\varepsilon\)) of the displacement map related to the period annulus around the origin. Then they apply the result to the example \[ \dot{x}=-y(3x^2+y^2)+\varepsilon P^\pm(x,y),\dot{y}=x(x^2-y^2)+\varepsilon Q^\pm(x,y), \] where \(P^\pm\), \(Q^\pm\) are polynomials of degree \(n\) and establish that, at first order analysis, the latter system has at most \(n\) limit cycles surrounding the origin.
