Generalizing \(H\)-measures which were independently introduced by \textit{L. Tartar} [Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A 115, No. 3--4, 193--230 (1990; Zbl 0774.35008)] and \textit{P. Gérard} [Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 16, No. 11, 1761--1794 (1991; Zbl 0770.35001)] on \(L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)\), the authors introduce the concept of \(H\)-distributions on Sobolev spaces. Explicitly, for \(k\in\mathbb{N}_0\) and conjugate exponents \(p,q\in (1,\infty)\) it is shown that, for any pair of sequences \((u_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) in \(W^{-k,p}(\mathbb{R}^d)\) and \((v_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) in \(W^{k,q}(\mathbb{R}^d)\) which both converge weakly to zero, there are subsequences \((u_{n'})_{n'\in\mathbb{N}}\), resp.\ \((v_{n'})_{n'\in\mathbb{N}}\) and \(\mu\) from the topological dual \(\mathcal{S\,E}'(\mathbb{R}^d\times S^{d-1})\) of the completed (\(\pi\)-)tensor product \(\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d)\hat{\otimes}C^\infty(S^{d-1})=:\mathcal{S\,E}(\mathbb{R}^d\times S^{d-1})\) such that \[ \lim_{n'\rightarrow\infty}\, _{_{W^{-k,p}}}\langle \varphi_1 u_{n'},\mathcal{A}_{\bar{\psi}}(\varphi_2 v_{n'})\rangle_{_{W^{k,q}}}=\,_{_{\mathcal{SE}'}}\langle\mu,(\varphi_1\bar{\varphi}_2)\otimes \psi\rangle_{_\mathcal{SE}} \] for all \(\varphi_1,\varphi_2\in\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d)\) and \(\psi\in C^\infty(S^{d-1})\), where \(\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d)\) denotes the space of rapidly decreasing smooth functions and \(\mathcal{A}_{\bar{\psi}}\) denotes the Fourier multiplier with symbol \(\bar{\psi}(\frac{\xi}{|\xi|})\), \(\xi\neq 0\). For a fixed pair \((u_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) and \((v_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\), all such \(\mu\) are called the \(H\)-distributions corresponding to this pair. It is shown that, for a weakly null sequence \((u_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) in \(W^{-k,p}(\mathbb{R}^d)\), the sequences \((\varphi u_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) converge strongly to zero in \(W^{-k,p}(\mathbb{R}^d)\) for all \(\varphi\in\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d)\) provided that, for every weakly null sequence \((v_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) in \(W^{k,q}(\mathbb{R}^d)\), all \(H\)-distributions corresponding to \((u_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) and \((v_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\) are zero.
