For compact connected semisimple Lie groups \(G\) of rank \(k\), the authors define a notion of lacunarity of the Fourier series of a function \(f\) on \(G\) by requiring that \(\hat f(\alpha)\) restricted to the maximal torus \(\mathbb T\) vanishes unless \(\alpha\) is in the finite union of \(k\)-fold products of lacunary sets on \(\mathbb Z\) (\(\mathbb Z^k=\hat\mathbb T\)). It is shown that this concept of lacunarity immediately yields a generalization of the classical result stating that no nontrivial function with lacunary Fourier series on the torus vanishes on a nontrivial open set to compact Lie groups.
