Let \(\alpha\in\mathbb{R}\), \(p\in(0,\infty)\) and \(q\in(0,\infty]\). Let \(B_l\), \(l\in\mathbb{N}_0\), denote the ball centred at the origin and of radius \(2^l\), and \(\chi_l=\chi_{R_l}\), where \(R_l=B_l\setminus B_{l-1}\) for \(l\geq 1\) and \(R_0=B_0\). The non-homogeneous Herz space \(K^{\alpha,q}_p(\mathbb{R}^n)\) consists of all functions \(f\in L_p^{\text{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n)\) such that \[ \left\|f\right\|_{K^{\alpha,q}_p(\mathbb{R}^n)}:= \left(\sum_l 2^{\alpha\,l q} \|f\,\chi_l\|^q_{L_p(\mathbb{R}^n)}\right)^{1/q} < \infty \] (with the usual modiffication when \(q=\infty\)). If, instead of the classical Lebesgue space \(L_p(\mathbb{R}^n)\), we consider the more general variable exponent Lebesgue space \(L_{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n)\) (where now \(p(\cdot)\) is allowed to be a general exponent measurable function bounded away from zero), we obtain the generalized Herz space \(K^{\alpha,q}_{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n)\). This paper deals with the variable exponent Herz-type Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces \(K^{\alpha,q}_{p(\cdot)}B_\beta^s(\mathbb{R}^n)\) and \(K^{\alpha,q}_{p(\cdot)}F_\beta^s(\mathbb{R}^n)\) (\(s\in\mathbb{R}\), \(\beta\in(0,\infty]\)). Such spaces are constructed as the classical Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces (following the Fourier analytical approach), but replacing the \(L_p\) norm by its generalization \(\|\cdot\|_{K^{\alpha,q}_{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n)}\). The main goal of this paper is to characterize the spaces \(K^{\alpha,q}_{p(\cdot)}B_\beta^s(\mathbb{R}^n)\) and \(K^{\alpha,q}_{p(\cdot)}F_\beta^s(\mathbb{R}^n)\) in terms of maximal functions (under appropriate restrictions on the variable exponent \(p(\cdot)\)).
