\textit{M. D. Acosta, R. M. Aron, D. García} and \textit{M. Maestre} in [J. Funct. Anal. 254, No. 11, 2780--2799 (2008; Zbl 1152.46006)] introduced the following concept: a couple \((X,Y)\) of Banach spaces has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators if, given \(\varepsilon>0\), there are \(\eta(\varepsilon)>0\) and \(\beta(\varepsilon)>0\) with \(\lim_{t \to 0} \beta(t)=0\) such that, for all continuous linear operators \(T:X \to Y\), \(\| T\| =1\), if \(x_0 \in S_X\) is such that \(\| Tx_0\| >1- \eta(\varepsilon)\), then there exists a point \(u_0 \in S_X\), and a continuous linear operator \(V: X \to Y\) that satisfies the following conditions: \(\| Vu_0\| =1\), \(\| u_{0}-x_{0}\| < \beta(\varepsilon)\) and \(\| V-T\| < \varepsilon\). They gave a characterization (called approximate hyperplane series property, abbreviation AHSP) of those \(Y\) for which \((\ell_1,Y)\) has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators. They showed in particular that \(L_1(\mu)\) and \(C(K)\) enjoy AHSP. On the other hand, \textit{K. Boyko, V. Kadets, M. Martín} and \textit{D. Werner}, motivated by their study of spaces with numerical index 1, introduced in [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 142, No.~1, 93--102 (2007; Zbl 1121.47001)] another class of Banach spaces that also contains \(L_1(\mu)\) and \(C(K)\) spaces. Namely, a Banach space \(X\) was called lush if for all \(x, y \in S_X\) and all \(\varepsilon>0\), there is a slice \(S\) of the unit ball containing \(x\) such that the distance from \(y\) to the absolutely convex hull of \(S\) is at most \(\varepsilon\). The paper under review is devoted to connections between the aforementioned properties. It is proved that every lush space has the AHSP. While every lush space has the alternative Daugavet property, there exists a space with the alternative Daugavet property that does not have the AHSP. It is shown also that there is a Banach space with both the AHSP and the alternative Daugavet property which is not lush.
