The authors give a characterization of the wave front set of \textit{L. Hörmander} [The analysis of linear partial differential operators. I: Distribution theory and Fourier analysis. Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenschaften, 256. Berlin Heidelberg-New York-Tokyo: Springer-Verlag (1983; Zbl 0521.35001)] in terms of Gabor frames, cf. \textit{H. G. Feichtinger} and \textit{H. G. Gröchenig} [J. Funct. Anal. 146, No. 2, 464--495 (1997; Zbl 0887.46017)]. To this end, the authors introduce Gabor frames depending on a small parameter \(\lambda>0\). Letting \(\lambda\to 0\), they are able to pass from the discrete setting to the local setting, and prove equivalence of definitions. Statements are first given in the frame of the modulation spaces, for which wave front sets were defined in \textit{S. Pilipovic}, \textit{N. Teofanov} and \textit{J. Toft} [J. Pseudo-Differ. Oper. Appl. 1, No. 3, 341--376 (2010; Zbl 1214.42039)]. Then, considering sequences of spaces, the wave front set of Hörmander is recaptured.
