The first section of the article presents a simple proof of the coincidence of non-zero spectra of products \(AB\) and \(BA\) of two linear closed and densely defined operators \(A\) and \(B\) acting between Banach spaces, provided that the resolvent sets of \(AB\) and \(BA\) are non-empty; this assertion was obtained earlier by \textit{V. Hardt, A. Konstsntinov} and \textit{R. Mennicken} [Math. Nachr. 215, 91--102 (2000; Zbl 0965.47002)]. Moreover, the authors of the article under review show that not only the non-zero spectra of products coincide, but also most prevalent types of spectra, and they establish some estimates on the norms of the resolvents of \(AB\) and \(BA\) . In the second part, where \(A=T\) acts in a Krein space and \(B=T^{[*]}\) is its Krein space adjoint, the authors continue to study the connections between spectral points of the operators \(T^{[*]}T\) and \(TT^{[*]}\) (cf.\ \textit{A. C. M. Ran} and \textit{M. Wojtylak} [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 63, No. 2, 263--280 (2009; Zbl 1189.47037)]). They compare the critical points of both operators and show that, under the assumption that both operators \(T^{[*]}T\) and \(TT^{[*]}\) have non-empty resolvent sets, the operator \(T^{[*]}T\) is locally definitizable exactly when \(TT^{[*]}\) is.
