Two-dimensional piecewise-polynomial splines and especially box-splines are known to be useful as approximations to functions and data by various approximation schemes, including the so-called quasi-interpolation. Quasi-interpolation is often used when the given data do not have to be recovered precisely at the points but for instance when certain polynomials are to be recovered by the approximation scheme. In this paper, quasi-interpolation with box-splines is studied when approximations on bounded domains are used. Together with these bounded data, the optimal approximation order of sufficiently smooth approximands (i.e. the functions which are to be approximated) is sought, and this is obtained by certain boundary conditions or conditions on the gradients of the approximants. Norm and error estimates for these approximants are given, including several numerical examples.
