The authors study the group \(C^*\)-algebra of the Lie group \(G_6\) by means of giving a complete description of its unitary spectrum \(\widehat{C^*(G_6)}\). The group \(G_6\) belongs to the class of exponential Lie groups, and by the work of many hands one can identify \(\widehat{C^*(G_6)}\) with the unitary dual \(\widehat{G_6}\). The authors give a description of the topology on \(\widehat{G_6}\) using methods of the coadjoint orbit. Guided by earlier studies of the unitary spectrum of \(C^*(G)\) for a locally compact group \(G\), one is led to study \(C^*\)-algebras associated to operator fields on \(\widehat{G}\). In the particular case of \(G_6\), the orbit space decomposes into a union of seven closed subsets \(S_0, \dots ,S_6\), and new methods are required to describe the topology on the unitary dual. The authors carry out a very fine analysis of this structure leading to a complete description of the boundary conditions on \(S_i\setminus S_{i-1}\) for \(i=1, \dots ,6\). The culmination of this analysis is a description of \(C^*(G_6)\) as the \(C^*\)-algebra of an operator field of a particular kind. The authors introduce the notion of almost \(C_0(\mathcal{K})\)-\(C^*\)-algebras, with \(\mathcal{K}\) being the algebra of compact operators on a certain Hilbert space, and show that \(C^*(G_6)\) is an almost \(C_0(\mathcal{K})\)-\(C^*\)-algebra.
