Let \(\pi\) be an arbitrary set of primes. A very broad generalization of the notion of nilpotent group is the notion of \(\pi\)-decomposable group, which is the direct product of a \(\pi\)-group and a \(\pi'\)-group. In this paper, the author obtains a description of the finite non-\(\pi\)-decomposable groups in which all 2-maximal subgroups are \(\pi\)-decomposable. The proof uses the author's recent results [from Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 285, Suppl. 1, S25-S41 (2014); translation from Tr. Inst. Mat. Mekh. (Ekaterinburg) 19, No. 3, 29-44 (2013; Zbl 1320.20017)] connected with the notion of control of the prime spectrum of finite simple groups. The finite nonnilpotent groups in which all 2-maximal subgroups are nilpotent were studied by \textit{Z. Janko} [Math. Z. 79, 422-424 (1962; Zbl 0104.24902)] in the case of nonsolvable groups and by the author [Mat. Zametki 3, 21-32 (1968; Zbl 0187.29504); translation in Math. Notes 3, 15-21 (1968)] in the case of solvable groups.
