The authors use the Ginzburg-Landau functional as a model to describe the response of a superconducting material to an applied magnetic field. They compare these results with the results when the external magnetic field does not vanish and prove the existence of a concentration of the energy near the zero set of the external magnetic field. In fact, the authors have obtained some energy asymptotics which are valid when the Ginzburg-Landau parameter is large and the strength of the external field is below the third critical field. A mathematical analysis is used to study the infimum of the Ginzburg-Landau functional in a two dimensional bounded and simply connected domain and with an external magnetic field allowed to vanish along a smooth curve.
