Let \(1<p\leq \infty\), \(0<q\leq \infty\) (\(1<q\leq \infty\) for \(F\)-spaces) and \(\alpha >0\). It is the main aim of the paper (Theorem 1.3) to characterize the homogeneous spaces \(\dot{B}^\alpha_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n)\) and \(\dot{F}^\alpha_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n)\) in terms of specific ball means. There is a counterpart for the inhomogeneous spaces \(B^\alpha_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n)\) and \(F^\alpha_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n)\) (Theorem 3.1). These characterizations can be transferred from \(\mathbb R^n\) to spaces of homogeneous type.
