The author gives a systematic study for the harmonic analysis of metaplectic wave-packets in \(L^2(\mathbb{R})\) via group representation theory. He proves an admissibility condition on closed subgroups of the special linear group \(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)\), which guarantees the square integrability of the associated metaplectic wave-packet representation on \(L^2(\mathbb{R})\). In the first part and the second part of the paper, the author gives an introduction of the fundamental role of the metaplectic (Shale-Weyl) representation in mathematical analysis elucidated by \textit{R. Howe} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 2, No. 3, 535--552 (1989; Zbl 0716.22006); Mathematics into the twenty-first century. Proceedings of the AMS centennial symposium, Providence, RI, USA, August 8--12, 1988. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society. 101--320 (1992; Zbl 0934.22001)]. Many applications (e.g. paraxial optics, quantum mechanics, etc.) prompt particular forms of metaplectic representation under various names; quadratic-phase transforms, linear canonical transforms [\textit{G. F. Calvo} and \textit{A. Picón}, in: Linear canonical transforms. Theory and applications. New York, NY: Springer. 429--453 (2016; Zbl 1336.81023)] and [\textit{J. J. Healy} (ed.) et al., Linear canonical transforms. Theory and applications. New York, NY: Springer (2016; Zbl 1337.78003)], Fresnel transforms, fractional Fourier transforms, Gaussian integral [\textit{V. V. Kisil}, Banach J. Math. Anal. 8, No. 2, 156--184 (2014; Zbl 1305.43009); Geometry of Möbius transformations. Elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic actions of SL\(_2(\mathbb R)\). With DVD-ROM. Proceedings of the 7th international ISAAC congress held at the Imperial College London, London, UK, July 13--18, 2009. Hackensack, NJ: World Scientific. 219--225 (2010; Zbl 1272.42024); Acta Appl. Math. 59, No. 1, 79--109 (1999; Zbl 0955.42024)]. In the article under review, the author approaches the topic from the theory of coherent state transforms. The abstract theory of covariant and coherent state transforms is the mathematical basis of modern high frequency approximation techniques and time-frequency (resp. time-scale) analysis. In the third and the fourth part of the paper, the author gives harmonic analysis over \(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)\) and metaplectic wave packet representations on \(L^2(\mathbb{R})\). In the fifth and the sixth part of the paper, the author gives square-integrability of metaplectic wave packet representations on \(L^2(\mathbb{R})\). Analytic and constructive analysis of metaplectic wave-packet representations over compact subgroups of \(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)\) are given and also some theorems on it with some suitable examples. In the last part of the paper, he gives an analytic study of metaplectic wave-packet representations over admissible subgroups of \(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)\).
