The authors provide a number of interesting results involving sectorial operators and generators of holomorphic semigroups. Let \(A\) be a Banach space sectorial operator with sector \(S_{\theta } \) and let \(f(z)\) be a holomorphic function on this sector such that \(f(A)\) is defined through an appropriate functional calculus. Recently, \textit{A. Gomilko} and \textit{Y. Tomilov} proved that, if \(f(z)\) is a Bernstein function, then \(-f(A)\)generates a bounded holomorphic semigroup whenever \(-A\) does so [Adv. Math. 283, 155--194 (2015; Zbl 1319.47034)]. The present paper contains a more direct proof of this result and also many related results. The authors describe classes of analytic functions \(f(z)\) such that \(f(A)\) is again a sectorial operator of the same type as \(A\). These results are based on a very interesting integral representation of the resolvent operator \((z+f(A))^{-1}\).
