The concept of normal functions was introduced by Noshiro in 1938 following earlier related work of Yosida 1934. Noshiro's definition was restricted to the unit disk and was later extended by Lehto and Virtanen in their seminal paper from 1957. Since that time the subject of normal functions and maps has been studied intensively, resulting in an extensive development in the single complex variable context and in generalizations to several complex variables settings, amongst others, by Lappan 1961, Bagemihl 1961, 1963, Bagemihl and Seidel 1960, 1961, Gavrilov 1961, 1961, Anderson, Clunie and Pommerenke 1974, in [\textit{P. V. Dovbush}, Mosc. Univ. Math. Bull. 36, No. 1, 44--48 (1981; Zbl 0492.32006); Mosc. Univ. Math. Bull. 36, No. 6, 41--44 (1981); translation from Vestn. Mosk. Univ., Ser. I 1981, No. 6, 33--36 (1981; Zbl 0489.32002); Vestn. Mosk. Univ., Ser. I 1981, No. 1, 38--42 (1981; Zbl 0471.32002)], by Funahashi 1984, Han 1986, and in [\textit{J. A. Cima} and \textit{S. G. Krantz}, Duke Math. J. 50, 303--328 (1983; Zbl 0522.32003)], see also the list of references in the book of Schiff 1992. Further developments on normal functions in infinite dimension can be found, amongst others, in [\textit{K.-T. Kim} and \textit{S. G. Krantz}, Expo. Math. 21, No. 3, 193--218 (2003; Zbl 1069.46026)] and [\textit{P. V. Dovbush}, Complex Var. Elliptic Equ. 56, No. 1--4, 315--323 (2011; Zbl 1256.32002)]. It is known that every Bloch function is normal. From the authors' abstract: ``We introduce and characterize Bloch functions on bounded symmetric domains, which may be infinite dimensional, by extending several well-known equivalent conditions for Bloch functions on the open unit disc \(U\) in \(\mathbb C\). We also generalize a number of results concerning Bloch functions on \(U\) to bounded symmetric domains.''
